Addition Strategies

Make as many tens as you can!

Remove the face cards and the 10 cards from a standard deck of cards. Tell your child that the value of the ace is 1. Shuffle the cards and deal them between you and your child. See who can sort their cards so that the values make 10. The person with the greatest number of tens wins. After you have determined a winner, go through each of the card combinations to check they are correct. This activity will help your child practice composing tens, a strategy that makes addition easier.
