First Grade Phonics Tips: Take Turns Reading Aloud
Take turns reading aloud with your child. You can alternate reading aloud page by page, paragraph by paragraph, or even by character!
Children will benefit from hearing you model fluency and intonation when you read aloud. When children read aloud, they’re building fluency skills—the ability to read with ease and efficiency. Give children a little extra time to sound out words for themselves. When they struggle, you can model sounding out words.
You can also model comprehension skills when reading together. Ask questions aloud such as:
“How did that happen? I wonder what’s going to happen next.”
“Who do you think is going to…?”
“I wonder why…?”
